Wayne Hillman

(US Army Specialist 4th Class, 1963-1966)

Wayne Hillman, much like his fellow Vietnam Vet Gary Deschaine, had graduated high school and was facing a dismal job market. Wayne had come from a military background, having served in both the cadet corps and the Essex and Kent Scottish regiment, so military service was a logical next step. At the time, his brother was traveling and seeing the world as an enlistee in the US Army, so as an option it was an enticing one. So, he did his service and with mere months remaining, and just after the birth of his first child, Wayne received his orders that he was being deployed to Vietnam.

His experiences there affected him profoundly. Today, as President of the Canadian Vietnam Veterans Memorial Association of Windsor, he works painstakingly to honour and preserve the memories of comrades who were lost, those who we’re losing now, and the Veterans’ families that were left behind.
